TROVE is an independent art gallery directed by me, curator and writer
Charlie Levine www.charlielevine.co.uk and artist David Miller
www.mysterdavid.co.uk . We have been up and running since August 2009
and have a new exhibition in the space every month. We are currently
situated in The Old Science Museum in the Jewellery Quarter,
Birmingham City Centre. Our current exhibition is by Birmingham Poet
Laureate Adrian Johnson, the next one is site responsive, opening 30th
April 2010 6-8pm and is called 'Show of Science'. It includes local
artists a.a.s., Luke Williams, Lee Stowers and Victoria Jenkins. Our
publicity image that accompanies this show is by Pete Ashton and taken
before the Museum was shut and left to be covered in dust then to be
re-discovered by David and myself.
The offical blurb goes like this:
gallery and its exhibitions are loyal to that term of phrase. TROVE do
not exhibit formal white cube gallery shows in a clean clinical space,
rather TROVE offers artists (and audiences) an opportunity to work in
a different type of environment, a dusty one with history and
relevance to the city of Birmingham. TROVE, currently located at The
Old Science Museum in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, allows for both
the curators and the artists to explore the presentation of work in
new ways through discussions about the pieces for display and the
site. Curators Charlie Levine and David Miller see TROVE as taking risks in
terms of exhibiting somewhat unconventionally contemporary art works
in a dusty former museum. This dislocation of representation based
around conversations and the difficulties a space such as TROVE
presents the curators, artists and viewers means that no two shows
will ever be the same. As Charlie and David says “We [TROVE] are presenting things that we
like, artists that make us react sympathetically to the space and
light, we don’t have a particular remit, we’re not limiting TROVE’s
programme to themes or styles of representation, rather we’re letting
these things evolve naturally. First and foremost we’re about play,
experimentation and confronting certain challenges that the old
science museum presents whilst working with some of the most exciting
and new artists from around the world.” images: 'The Former Museum of Science and Industry' series, credit Pete Ashton Zoe Williams' 'The Sickly Trickle' installation image, credit Charlie Levine www.charlielevine.co.uk | www.trove.org.uk
